Feeder Cattle Weighted Average Report for 03/20/2019

Receipts: 2,585 Last Week: 1,193 Year Ago: 1,804

Compared to last week: Feeder steers were too lightly tested
last sale to develop an acurate market trend, however steady
to higher undertones were noticed on like quality cattle. The
best test for feeder heifers was for 600-649 lbs which sold
fully steady, all other weights were too lightly tested to
develop an accurate market trend however steady to weak
undertones were noticed. Quality this week was mostly plain
to average. Calves were offered in mostly small packages
forcing buyers to peice together loads. Flesh conditions
were mixed from light to moderate plus. CME positions saw
triple digit gains today and buyers reacted positively
to higher contract movement. Market activity this week was
moderate. Weigh up cows sold on mostly light to moderate
demand for heavy offerings. Feeding demand from non packer
buyers was light this week as muddy pen conditions in the
North and flooding in the Central plains has feeding buyers
mostly out of the market. This allowed packers to buy most
of the cow offering this week at lower money dispite higher
cow meat prices. Slaughter cow prices suffered as well, as
more cows avaliable to packers allowed them to purchase cows
at lower money. Slaughter cows sold mostly 2.00-5.00 lower,
while feeding cows sold mostly 3.00-6.00 lower. The cutter
cow cutout continues to gain momentum. As of todays close the
cutter cow cutout was 168.54, 0.30 higher than yesterdays value.
Slaughter bulls were too lightly tested to develop an accurate
market trend, however lower undertones were noticed. The feeder
cattle offering was 51 percent steers and bulls, 49 percent
heifers with 61 percent weighing over 600 lbs. Offerings this
sale were approximately 51 percent feeder cattle, 12 percent
slaughter cows, 1 percent slaughter bulls, 26 percent feeding
cows and bulls and cows returning to the country, balance bred
cows, heifers and pairs. Next sale will be Wednesday, March
27th, 2019.
